Time Walk (Unlimited) Pulled at Shoebox Con
At last weekend's Shoebox convention in St. Paul, Minnesota, a customer at a vendor's shop opened an Unlimited Edition copy of Time Walk from a sealed starter deck, news that quickly circulated around the event.
Genesis Hobbies' Statement on Time Walk
Details are relatively sparse, but according to the vendor, Genesis Hobbies of Lawrence, KS:
"I had this UNL starter for quite awhile, displaying it for sale at the last couple of MagicCons at my booth. It had good provenance, but the fact that it had a gold foil “pull string” in the wrapper meant it was more susceptible to potentially being re-sealed (vs. the neutral, non-foil pull strings other UNL decks have). The person who bought it traded me a bunch of cards for it — I cut him a great deal, because he said he was going to open it on the spot. I thought about letting people know it was going to be opened so we could get a crowd, but the buyer wanted to keep it low key. So there were only a couple of people around for the opening, but word traveled very quickly at the small convention. The owner has decided to keep it sealed for now, and it will be on display at the Genesis Hobbies booth at MagicCon: Las Vegas. Due to collation mapping, we know that the most likely card in the other rare slot is Two-Headed Giant of Foriys (~71 percent), but it also has a chance to be Ancestral Recall (~9 percent) or a few other cards that are less exciting.
On Social Media
With word spreading across Shoebox, a couple of social media posts popped up as well. For example:
Nothing like seeing someone open a sealed TIME WALK, we heard that reaction across the whole convention center! Ggs to the folks at Genesis Hobbies!
What is Shoebox?
According to the event's website, "Shoebox is a convention that focuses on what you love most about Magic: creative expression, social play, and friendly competition." Shoebox featured an assortment of formats such as Commander, Cube, and a bunch of "indie" formats not necessarily recognized by Wizards of the Coast. The convention is proxy-friendly, save for double-faced proxies, and values the merits of expressive play.
So, About That Time Walk...
On Scryfall, an Unlimited copy of Time Walk is valued at approximately $3,200. However, this copy is fresh and still sealed, so paired with the hype surrounding its opening it could fetch higher prices than that. That's obviously dependent on whether the owner ever wishes to sell the iconic Power 9 piece by itself, which would involve unsealing the deck.
Two-Headed Giant of Foriys from Unlimited costs a little over $68 at the time of writing, but an Unlimited copy of Ancestral Recall is valued at a little over $4,100. Needless to say, it would be a massive gamble if the owner of the Time Walk were to unseal it to sell the card individually.
Conclusion
And now, we'd like to open the floor to you. What would you do if you opened such an amazing and iconic piece of Magic: The Gathering history? Would you unseal the Time Walk, or would you keep it in the wrapping? And if you did unseal it, would you keep it or sell it? Sound off in the comments below!
