Ignoble Hierarch | Illustrated by Victor Adame Minguez

Welcome to Sphere of Influence, a pre-FNM look at some potential movers and shakers that are worth picking up before their prices increase.

Once a card has been minted as a Commander staple, it will often begin a steady march upwards in price until an aggressive series of reprints finally drives down the cost. It doesn't always happen—to wit, Jeska's Will is now a $33 card, Smothering Tithe sits at $40, and Rhystic Study has hit $55—but when it does, Commander players rejoice and load up their decks. Here are some staples that remain affordable… for now…

Seedborn Muse - $8

The ability to have all our stuff untap every single turn, not just our own, is understandably a busted one, and Seedborn Muse has been riding this power wave since Commander first became a format. It's not uncommon for the card to be well into double digits in price, despite reprints. Snagging one for less than $10 is an opportunity not to be missed.

Ignoble Hierarch - $1

This Jund-producing mana dork was quite hyped when it released in Modern Horizons 2, but has seen a steady decline in price since then. For only $1, we can snag a fantastic addition to any deck containing black, red, and green, as the card is hardly ever entirely dead no matter the game state.

Skullclamp - $5

No matter how many times Wizards of the Coast prints Skullclamp, a sac outlet and powerful card draw engine all in one, its price never dips below $5. It certainly goes up, though, meaning this is the ideal time to grab as many as you can. There are few decks that wouldn't benefit from a Skullclamp in the mix.

Pitiless Plunderer - $3

This card goes great with Skullclamp: when a creature we control dies, even tokens, we receive a Treasure token. We can become quite wealthy in the right deck, which is why Pitiless Plunderer is often at least $10. Capitalize on its recent reprint in Final Fantasy Commander and snag one for cheap.

The Price is Right

Which Commander cards are you finally picking up now that the price has dipped? Any particular decks you are hoping to level up?
