Lorwyn Eclipsed Is Available To Trade
Morningtide's Light | Art by Mark Poole
Friendly greetings and welcome to Magic's long-awaited return to a beloved plane. The Cardsphere Team is pleased to announce Lorwyn Eclipsed (ECL), Lorwyn Eclipsed Commander (ECC), and Special Guests (SPG) are available to trade.
Lorwyn Eclipsed takes the game back to the dual plane of Lorwyn-Shadowmoor, where day and night exist as two versions of one reality. Inspired by the folklore of England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, Lorwyn-Shadowmoor is simultaneously the domain of the delightful and the disturbing.
Lorwyn Eclipsed shines a light on beloved lore, mechanics, and artists we haven't seen in a long time. Meanwhile many of the set's components illuminate how far the game has come since 2008.
Cardboard Fairytale
Bitterbloom Bearer reinterprets the storied enchantment Bitterblossom as a creature. The headliner card for Lorwyn Eclipsed is a special version of Bitterbloom Bearer illustrated by Rebecca Guay.
Guay produced the original Bitterblossom for Morningtide (MOR), and her art continues to entrance players and collectors. Artificial scarcity is the villain in this fairytale, because there's only 500 of these Collector Booster exclusives.
A Full Art Gallery
Another 13 cards feature alternate images by artists from past Lorwyn-Shadowmoor sets. Every artist in this series of cards is a legend in their own right. Their combined styles and talents define a golden era of Magic art. Since this is a trade announcement and not an art exhibition, I forced myself to pick just one to highlight.
The card name Catharsis perfectly describes my experience with these borderless cards. Admittedly, the image is weird in a way I wouldn't expect from Wayne Reynolds. Frankly, I don't understand why Catharsis looks like a psychedelic snail, but I don't need to comprehend every piece.
This baker's dozen of borderless cards are one part visual delight and one part nostalgic fix.
Fable Showcase
I remember opening my first storybook showcase at a Throne of Eldraine draft. It was pack one, pick one. I took that Hypnotic Sprite like it hypnotized me. The new fable showcase strikes a similarly enticing chord.
While Eldraine's showcases appear to emerge from the pages of a book, the fable showcase invokes a more primal form of storytelling. These treatments feel like an oral tradition, eventually depicted by someone hoping to never forget.
Same Place, Different Setting
Lorwyn-Shadowmoor's mysterious dichotomy is on full display in multiple full-art lands. Five different Shocklands get reversible reprints, each featuring the same location in daylight on one side and night on the other.
We also get to explore the contrast between Lorwyn and Shadowmoor on the ECL's full-art basic lands. The pairs of each basic type are illustrated by the same artist; showing how one person imagined a location's transformation.
Extended Art
Examining extended art cards ranks among my favorite preview season pastimes. Usually, I find a piece that reveals additional detail, and sometimes those details are significant. This time I'm highlighting an extended art card for what isn't there.
The extended art version of Champions of the Perfect opens up more space for the composition. Simply deleting the border expands the sense of pursuit and makes more room for the tension of the scene.
Japan Showcase
The ever-popular Japan Showcase treatment is back in both non-foil, traditional foil, and fracture foil. Once again, the fracture foils are dazzling. If there's a limit to demand for cards with anime art, we haven't found it yet. These cards will move on the marketplace if you can get them.
I praised the execution of Japan Showcase cards in the announcements for Duskmourn and especially Foundations. However, I'm put off by the inclusion of Japan Showcase in this set. I know that won't be the case for everyone, and Cardsphere is here to help get those cards into the right hands.
Special Guests (SPG)
The twenty Special Guest reprints appear in Lorwyn Eclipsed boosters. Sixteen of them first appeared in one of the original Lorwyn and Shadowmoor Blocks. Two of the cards reprinted from non-Lorwyn sets are Goblins, one is an Elf, and the fourth is an Elemental. Although these creatures originated on other planes, they are right at home in Lorwyn-Shadowmoor.
The art on these Special Guests ranges from whimsical to wicked, as it should be for a setting with duality as a central theme.
Lorwyn Eclipsed Commander (ECC)
Two preconstructed Commander decks introduce 24 new cards. Another 19 reprints feature new art.
A nostalgic release like Lorwyn Eclipsed needs its inside jokes, references, and continuity. However, a Standard set must balance fan service into a Draft environment. Fortunately, Commander products provide another avenue to fill in the gaps. The new cards in these decks feel like a natural extension of Lorwyn-Shadowmoor's themes.
"Shut Up, Snake!" - Cragg the Boggart
Whether you're looking for Lorwyn Eclipsed sealed products, or singles for your other decks, you can find them on Cardsphere. This set is a visual masterpiece, and I'm optimistic it will be an all-timer for gameplay.
What's your favorite art in the set? What decks are you going to build? Tell us in the comments or join the conversation on the Cardsphere Discord. Until next time, happy trading.
