12 Most Valuable Dog Cards
Loyal Warhound | Illustrated by Dmitry Burmak
The Dog creature type, unlike Cats, has been around only since 1995’s Ice Age. Furthermore, there are more than double the number of Cats in Magic than there are Dogs. I don’t want to speculate, but it seems Magic’s designers might be more Cat people than Dog people, though I could be barking up the wrong tree.
That argument bears fruit (or treats, or kibble, etc.) when you look at the most valuable Dog cards versus the most valuable Cat cards. Only 12 unique Dog cards sit above an $8 price point, and the high-end value sees five Cats worth more than the most valuable pupper. Whether you’re a dog or cat person, it can’t be denied that these cards are extremely cute. Let’s go… and keep your eyes peeled for squirrels.
Note: Prices all come from TCGPlayer over the past calendar year, unless otherwise noted, which are subject to rapid change based on market conditions. Also, no duplicates are allowed on these lists; cards can be featured once, and that’s it.
12. Generous Pup – Foundations Jumpstart
Market Price: $8.40
The theme of many of the cards on this list is simple: they’re extremely cute illustrations of adorable little doggos doing extremely lovable things. This 2/2 with vigilance from Foundations Jumpstart certainly fits that bill.
Gameplay-wise, this little cutie is perfect in a +1/+1 counters matter shell, as giving +1/+1 counters to the rest of your team whenever this pupper gets one seems good. Combine with other mass-counter-adders, like Cathars’ Crusade or Felidar Retreat, and you’re in business.
11. Selfless Savior – Artist Series: Randy Vargas Secret Lair Drop
Market Price: $9.24
This one-drop doggo has only had two printings. Both of them feature, arguably, some of the most devastating flavor text in Magic history. Beautiful, sure, but… no, you’re crying!
Ultimately, this adorable little buddy can be sacrificed to protect another one of your creatures (often a commander), but why would you do that, when you can just die alongside your loyal friend? That’s the way I’d like to go out, thank you very much.
10. Zodiac Dog – Portal Three Kingdoms
Market Price: $11.10
Much like the most valuable Cat cards of all time, a Zodiac creature from Portal Three Kingdoms weighs in with a fairly impressive price point for a common-rarity card.
Of course, that’s due to the supreme scarcity of the Portal Three Kingdoms set, but it doesn’t make this card any easier to shake loose from online marketplaces—or cheaper, for that matter.
9. Spirited Companion – Dogs Are Better Than Cats Secret Lair Drop
Market Price: $11.73
First printed in 2022’s Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, this 1/1 enchantment creature has been printed a few times since, and it retains a non-bulk price point across even its most common printings.
This version is by far the most valuable rendition of this lovable pupster, and even though the Dogs Are Better Than Cats Secret Lair Drop didn’t sell as well as the Cats Are Better Than Dogs one (furthering my argument that Magic’s designers and player base are more cat people), this card was still a big hit from the drop and retains a hefty price point.
8. Loyal Warhound (Ampersand Foil Promo) – Adventures in the Forgotten Realms
Market Price: $11.99
Ampersand Foils are ultra-rare promotional versions of specific Rare and Mythic cards from Adventures in the Forgotten Realms. Distributed exclusively to WPN Premium stores in tiny quantities, they are highly sought after due to their extreme scarcity, though this one is worth just a whisker more than #8 on this list.
A 3/1 with vigilance is nothing to sneeze at, but tack on a mini-Land Tax-esque ability, and you’re looking at a truly wonderful dog. Who’s a good boy or girl? Loyal Warhound is!
7. Dog Token – Raining Cats and Dogs Secret Lair Commander Deck
Market Price: $13.85
A rarity on these lists, this Dog Token card from the Raining Cats and Dogs Secret Lair Commander Deck is worth a pretty penny on the secondary market, and it’s easy to see why.
This little furball (“I think it’s a Pomeranian”) with its obsidian black eyes staring lovingly at its owner/player/best pal simply represents amazing artwork from Allison Carl, who has only illustrated five Magic cards. Thank goodness one of them is this adorable token.
6. Phelia, Exuberant Shepherd (Foil Etched) – Modern Horizons 3
Market Price: $16.22
Flicker/blink effects (flicker is often preferred for triggers that occur end of turn, while blink is usually immediate) such as the one found on Phelia are often high-dollar cards, as the synergistic play styles that these cards lend themselves to are immeasurably fun build-arounds.
Combine a potent flickering effect with an adorable Corgi (come on, Corgis in Magic? Who can say no?!), and you’ve got the makings of a top-dollar card.
5. K-9, Mark I (Tardis Showcase) – Doctor Who
Market Price: $39.62
A great piece of Commander tech, especially if you’re playing a Doctor commander, this version of K-9, Mark I boasts striking cartoonish artwork from Tyler Walpole, who has produced a plethora of cards in this style over his years contributing artwork to Magic.
Giving a nifty ward boost to your other legendary creatures is a fun add-on, but it’s K-9’s activated ability that truly unleashes this Robot Dog, as sometimes unblockability on another legendary creature can lead to a surprise win if foes aren’t expecting it.
4. Rin and Seri, Inseparable – Raining Cats and Dogs Secret Lair Commander Deck
Market Price: $49.39
Still a fun payoff in both Cat and Dog decks, you simply must play the back side of this two-sided creature if you’re playing a Dog deck, as it shows the two creatures having a grand old time – with Rin ferrying Seri on its back, like a good pupper would.
Also, if you want to walk your way to victory with this creature’s activated ability, playing a critical mass of Dogs is the way to go anyway.
3. Dogmeat, Ever Loyal (Showcase Pip-Boy Surge Foil) – Fallout
Market Price: $84.65
This Naya legendary Dog acts as both a mill engine that also plays well in Voltron-style builds that care about racking up Auras and Equipment on a strong, evasive creature.
While Junk tokens from the Fallout set lend themselves to a somewhat durdly play style, this ever-loyal pupper will be happy to play the long game (as he enjoys playtime) or end the game himself as a suited-up creature with help from his ETB trigger.
2. Yoshimaru, Ever Faithful – Raining Cats and Dogs Secret Lair Commander Deck
Market Price: $92.65
The second-most-valuable Dog card ever also happens to be the most valuable card from a Secret Lair Commander deck as well.
With amazing artwork from Fiona Hsieh as well as the ability to pair with a number of other strong options via its partner ability (five pairings sit above 1,000 decks on EDHREC), it’s no wonder that this glorious Akita is worth close to $100.
1. Enduring Courage (Japan Showcase Fracture Foil) – Duskmourn: House of Horror
Market Price: $134.95
The popular Japan Showcase treatment remains a frequent one that Wizards of the Coast goes back to, and with cards like Enduring Courage tipping the scales as the most valuable Dog card ever, it’s easy to see why.
Nuisuke has only illustrated this Magic card, but luckily, it’s the priciest Dog ever, and its beautiful artwork and premium foiling method certainly do speak to being a worthwhile—ahem—top dog on this list.
Now, Who’s Ready for Some Belly Rubs?
Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoyed finding the emphasized phrases snuck into this article that are related to human’s best friend. Everybody loves a pupper, but WotC has to answer for its seeming Cat bias. Either way, may your tummy be forever rubbed and your food bowl be forever overflowing. Live long and paws-per.
